All About the New Mazda CX-9

Now in its second production cycle, the Mazda CX-9 has established its reputation as a midsize crossover SUV that’s fun to drive, delivers more-than-decent gas mileage, and a powerful engine. A three-row vehicle that accommodates up to seven people, this SUV is now available in five trim levels:
• Sport
• Touring
• Carbon Edition (new for this model year)
• Grand Touring
• Signature

Under the hood of this vehicle is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces up to 250 horsepower if you feed it premium fuel. (This number drops to 227 horsepower with regular gasoline.) The engine is tuned for remarkable acceleration, and it is tied to a six-speed automatic transmission that includes a manual shifter and a Sport mode for an exciting ride. If you go with the brand-new Carbon Edition trim or higher, paddle shifters are added on the steering wheel for increased gear-shifting convenience. The vehicle is highly maneuverable vehicle than most other entries in its class, thanks to G-Vectoring Control technology that adjusts the engine’s torque in response to steering inputs for more controlled cornering and turning. Due to its drivetrain configuration and standard front-wheel drive, the CX-9 delivers an estimated peak of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which are some of the best numbers in the midsize crossover category. However, there’s always the option of all-wheel drive, which comes with off-road traction assist for better performance on slippery surfaces.

Of the five available trims, the Sport has the highest maximum capacity, since it has a bench-style seat in the second row. The Carbon Edition and Signature each have a pair of captain’s chairs to reduce maximum capacity to six people, and the Touring and Grand Touring offer the choice between the two seating configurations. The Sport includes heated front seats, six-way power on the driver’s seat, soft-touch cloth seat material, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel as standard. The Touring gains leather seating surfaces (in place of cloth) and an extension of six-way power to the front passenger seat. The Carbon Edition has distinctive sports-style red leather seats, and it welcomes driver-seat memory, steering-wheel and second-row heating, and front-seat cooling. Unique to the range-topping Signature are Nappa leather trim and steering-wheel contrast stitching.

A remote keyless entry system enables door unlocking and locking with the press of a key fob button, and a push button is placed next to the steering wheel for convenient engine starting. Automatic climate controls are placed in front of the driver, front passenger, and second-row passengers for customizing heating and cooling preferences. Infotainment is remarkably robust; this crossover uses a large, 10.2-inch touchscreen to integrate the following elements:

• AM/FM radio tuner with HD Radio technology
• Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming
• Hands-free text messaging
• voice recognition

The Grand Touring and Signature stand out with a 360-degree camera in place of the rearview one.
